The Studierendenwerk Würzburg is responsible for promoting the economic, social and cultural well-being and health of approximately 48,000 students in Aschaffenburg, Bamberg, Schweinfurt and Würzburg.

Studierendenwerke (Student Services) have a long tradition in Germany: after World War I they emerged from self-help initiatives. Back then, students combated economic hardship by building canteens and student houses and setting up loan institutions with support of the economy.

Today, more than 90 years after their founding, the 58 Studierendenwerke are modern service companies with a turnover of billions of euros nationwide and more than 17,000 employees.

The representatives' assembly and the board of directors take fundamental decisions and draw up the budget. These committees are composed of representatives of students, universities as well as representatives of public life. The members of the board of directors and the management are volunteers. The executive body is the Managing Director, who is elected by the committees.
